Whether you’re an experienced woodturner or just starting out, understanding wood moisture content will help you make turnings that resist cracking and warping and last for years.

Úspešné sústruženie dreva, rovnako ako každé spracovanie dreva, si vyžaduje starostlivé riadenie obsahu vlhkosti dreva. Obsah vlhkosti je dôležitým faktorom ovplyvňujúcim fungovanie dreva a trvanlivosť a trvalú krásu hotového výrobku.

Pochopenie obsahu vlhkosti

MC is the weight of the water in a piece of wood compared to the weight of the wood without the water (its oven-dry weight). The formula is:

MC = (hmotnosť vody / hmotnosť suchého dreva) x 100

For example, a 10-lb. block of wood that contains 1 lb. of water has a dry weight of 9 lb., so its MC is:

(1 ÷ 9 100) x 11.1 = XNUMX %

Dôležitosť kontroly MC

Wood expands and contracts as its MC changes. So if MC is allowed to drop significantly after a piece has been turned, the wood can shrink, crack or warp. Warping occurs because wood shrinks by different amounts in different directions across the grain, or because it dries unevenly.

That’s why it’s best to keep the MC steady, within about 2 percentage points, from the time you make the piece through its time in service.

Relatívna vlhkosť a rovnovážna vlhkosť

As we saw before, MC is determined by the relative humidity of the surrounding air. As RH increases, wood absorbs moisture. As RH decreases, wood releases moisture to the air. When the wood is in balance with the surrounding air, the exchange of moisture stops. This is called the equilibrium point, and the MC of the wood at this point is called the rovnovážny obsah vlhkosti (EMC).

Improper MC can cause problems when you’re turning the wood. If the MC is too high when you do the final turning, the piece will shrink and distort as it dries. If the MC is too low, the wood can crack or chip.

Wood can also dry unevenly because moisture escapes through the end grain much faster than through the side grain.

Keď drevo dosiahne správnu MC, finálne sústruženie odstráni zvyšný odpadový materiál a vytvorí konečný tvar. So správnou MC sa kus po finálnom sústružení nezmrští ani nedeformuje.

Kontrola obsahu vlhkosti

Mnoho sústružníkov dreva rado začína so zeleným drevom.

Kiln drying uses heat and air circulation to speed up the drying process. Kiln-dried wood for interior use is typically dried to about 6% to 8% MC, which makes it ready for turning. The drawback is that it’s relatively expensive.

Air-dried wood is less expensive than kiln-dried, but it’s often only dried to about 10% to 18% MC. You’ll need to dry this wood further before final turning.

Sušenie dreva

If you’re using wood that isn’t dried to the proper 6% to 9% MC, you’ll need to dry it yourself. There are several ways to do this. First, you can air-dry it by keeping it in an enclosed space conditioned to 30% to 50% RH. Drying this way can take many months, but it’s inexpensive and it ensures slow, even drying.

You can also kiln-dry it by using a home-made kiln. If you have a small enclosed space, you can provide heat with regular incandescent light bulbs. Some people have had success drying wood in a microwave oven, but it can cause problems if it’s done incorrectly or too fast.

The end grain dries faster than the rest of the wood. You can get more even drying by sealing the end grain with an end-grain sealer such as Anchorseal.

As wood dries and approaches its EMC, drying slows and eventually stops. You can tell when this happens by weighing the wood in your controlled space that you keep at 30% to 50% RH.

With a precise digital scale, weigh the wood every few days and record the weight until it stops losing weight. Once the weight has stabilized, the wood has reached the EMC for that space and is ready to be turned.

Použitie stupnice na presné meranie MC

You can also measure the exact MC by using a scale. This is a more complicated and tedious process, and it requires a very precise scale. It also requires an oven for drying the wood. Wood can give off resins, extractives, and odors as it dries, so use an oven that isn’t used for food.

First, cut a small block, about a 1-inch cube, from the wood you want to measure. A block that size weighs only a fraction of an ounce, so weigh it on a scale that reads to at least 0.01 gram, and record the weight. This is the “initial weight.”

Next, dry the block in an oven at 214°F to 221°F (101°C to 105°C), the range specified in ASTM D4442, the standard for oven-dry moisture testing. After about 24 hours, weigh the block every few hours and record the weight. When it stops losing weight, it’s dry.

Odvážte blok a zaznamenajte hmotnosť. Toto je „hmotnosť po vysušení v peci“. Potom použite tieto dve hmotnosti na výpočet MC:

MC = ((initial weight − oven-dry weight) x 100) ÷ oven-dry weight

Meranie MC pomocou vlhkomera

Meranie vlhkosti pomocou váhy je časovo náročné a zdĺhavé. Vlhkomery ho môžu urýchliť a spríjemniť.

Existujú dva typy vlhkomery: pin-type meters and pinless meters.

Pin-type meters measure the wood’s electrical resistance, which drops as MC rises. The meter has two metal pins that you push into the wood to the desired depth. The resistance is measured between the pins. The lower the resistance, the higher the MC.

Orientácia drevených vlákien tiež ovplyvňuje odčítanie, takže je potrebné zatĺcť kolíky so správnou orientáciou.

Pinless meters send an electromagnetic signal into the wood to measure its dielectric properties. To take a reading, you place the meter on a flat surface of the wood. The reading is available in seconds. There are no pins to mar the surface of the wood. There’s no time wasted hammering the pins into the wood, so a pinless meter can be much faster to use.

Merače vlhkosti dreva are much faster and easier to use than a scale for measuring MC.

Bezkolíkové merače majú oproti kolíkovým meračom tieto výhody:

  • Nepoškodzujú povrch dreva
  • Nevyžadujú orientačné a zatĺkacie kolíky
  • They’re largely unaffected by wood temperature and grain orientation
  • They’re faster and easier to use
